Understanding additional charges (out of bundle)
Sometimes you may notice charges on your bill that sit outside your standard tariff. These are called Additional Charges (also known as out-of-bundle charges or overage).
This guide explains when these charges can happen, how roaming and unlimited allowances fit in, and where to find full pricing details.
When do additional charges occur?
You may see extra charges in the following situations:
- Beyond allowances – If you use more data, calls, or texts than your tariff includes.
- Non-standard services – Calls or texts to Premium Rate or non-geographic numbers aren’t included in your allowances.
- Satellite usage – Connecting to a satellite network (e.g. on a cruise ship or plane) is not covered by your tariff.
- International calls/texts – Calling or texting from the UK to non-UK destinations.
- Roaming – Using your phone abroad, especially outside the Europe Zone or beyond Fair Usage limits.
- Direct Debit issues – If a payment fails, a £20.83+VAT fee applies. If a Direct Debit is cancelled without replacement, a £7.50+VAT fee applies per invoice.
Roaming and additional charges
Roaming means using your device outside the UK. Charges may apply for:
- Calls, texts, and data outside the Europe Zone.
- Usage beyond Fair Usage thresholds, even in the Europe Zone.
- Voicemail when abroad.
To help manage costs:
- Use Spend Controls to set limits on roaming data and usage.
- Check our Roaming Guide before you travel for country-specific charges and available bolt-ons.
Unlimited allowances and extra costs
Having an unlimited tariff doesn’t always mean everything is included. For example:
- Unlimited texts don’t include Premium Rate, international, or non-geographic numbers.
- Unlimited data is subject to Fair Usage Policy, especially when roaming.
- Some specialist usage (like maritime, satellite, or inflight networks) will always be charged separately.
