Understanding and managing captive pages
Captive pages are a way for us to communicate important information directly to a user’s device.
They appear when a service reaches its spend limit and allowances are restricted to prevent further charges. Captive pages are active on all services by default, but you can choose to manage them in my.plan if you don’t want them enabled for your account.
How captive pages work
To trigger a captive page, a spend control must first be set up in my.plan. This includes:
- Defining the spend limit
- Choosing who should be notified when the limit is reached
Once in place, a captive page will appear if usage goes beyond the set limit.
There are two types of captive page:
- Authorised – shows which allowances have been restricted and allows the user to reconnect services by adding a bolt-on or increasing the spend limit.
- Unauthorised – shows which allowances have been restricted but does not allow bolt-ons or spend limit changes.
Managing captive page authorisation
You can decide whether captive pages are authorised or unauthorised for your account:
- Log in to my.plan.
- From the top navigation, go to Controls > Captive Page Authorisation.
- Use the Blocked switch to authorise or unauthorise captive pages.
Adding a bolt-on via captive page
If a service is suspended because it has reached its spend limit:
- The captive page will appear automatically.
- If authorised, it will display bolt-on options (e.g. extra data, minutes, or texts).
- Users can add the bolt-on directly from the page without logging in separately.
This keeps services running with minimal interruption.
Increasing spend limits via captive page
Authorised captive pages can also be used to increase the spend limit for that month.
Spend limits can be set at: £0, £10, £15, £20, £35, £50, £75, £100, £200, £300, or £500 per service.
- If the new limit is reached, restrictions are reapplied in the same way.
- At the start of the next month, limits reset to their original value.
Example: If your monthly spend limit is £50 and you increase it by £20, the limit becomes £70 for that month. At the start of the next month, it resets back to £50.
Notifications
Whenever a captive page is triggered, notifications are sent to:
- The user affected by the restriction
- Any contacts nominated during spend control setup
This ensures the right people are always informed about usage limits and available options.
Why captive pages matter
Captive pages are an essential tool for cost control. They:
- Provide instant alerts when spend limits are reached
- Offer quick ways to add bolt-ons or adjust spend limits
- Keep you in control of costs and avoid unexpected charges
With captive pages, you’ll always know where you stand — and have the tools to stay connected without overspending.
